I’m always on the hunt for artists that blow me away. That’s how I became acquainted with my curator-soulmate Emily Robertson, owner of Montreal contemporary art gallery, Galerie Robertson Ares. Our friendship has its modern-day origins in our DMs after discovering her exhibitions on Instagram; I had to say hi and introduce myself, as this gallery director had such an incredible eye for contemporary artists, I had to meet the woman behind the feed.
Hedy Yang is a sculptor who creates amazing, hand-painted vessels. Her show entitled Hedy Yang: On the Horizon is on view at Galerie Robertson Ares in Montreal, Quebec until May 25, 2024. Here is the gallery’s press release below, reposted with permission:
Hedy Yang’s work focuses on refining her sculptures and exploring clay’s properties. Her collection of vessels, inspired by her surroundings, transforms fleeting moments into whimsical and opulent ceramic pieces. Yang’s cloud series began during her residency in the Adirondack Mountains, contrasting her urban upbringing in Detroit. Isolated from modern conveniences, she immersed herself in nature’s beauty, particularly sunrises and sunsets, finding inspiration in the unobstructed vistas. Her designs emphasize simplicity, drawing from the Taoist principle of the Uncarved Block—celebrating the beauty of things in their original form. Yang’s pieces, featuring billowy clouds and color gradients, capture the transient beauty of the sky, aiming to evoke wonder and peace.
Here are some of my favorite pieces available from Yang:
