A pillow? A tray? A coffee table book? Nope. My go-to accessory I put in every room is …

A VASE.
While it may seem like a simple addition, the vase can take a vignette in your home to a whole other level. Its power is not to be underestimated, like the power of love or a child’s Christmas wish. When I’m shopping for vases in my projects or home, I’m not looking for your garden-variety clear glass vessel. I’m imagining where exactly this vase is going, if I envision a tall arrangement or short arrangement there, if I’m referencing a color used elsewhere or if this will be an unexpected pop, etc times infinity. I’m also looking for sculptural shapes and artful details, like the vases in the powder room above (shop my look for that neat bubble bud vase!). Have I mentioned how much I love vases, people?!
So besides the obvious that they’re vessels to hold flowers, nature’s most beautiful creation, yeah yeah yeah… Can we talk about how the vase itself can be an amazing object that can add so much personality and sophistication to your space all on its own? They can absolutely be pieces of sculpture adorning your mantel or coffee table, and thinking about them this way is a great trick to elevating your home style and decor when you’re shopping for one. (Or two, or twelve.)
Of course, I’d be remiss not to mention the numerous studies showing that exposure to flowers can have a positive impact on our mood and well-being, reducing stress, anxiety, and even improving cognitive function. So when you think of it that way, isn’t getting yourself a bouquet or two at the grocery store, rearranging them to look elegant and luxe, and decorating your house with them a form of self-care? Like a bubble bath, a face mask, or a disco nap in your car? This designer says YES.
Are you a fan of vases and having fresh flowers in your space too? Here are some of my favorite colorful vases and bud vases, and if you’re redecorating, here are my favorite places to shop for affordable art.
